Who Can Take HPV Vaccine

Introduction

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most prevalent viral infections globally. This virus spreads mainly through skin-to-skin contact. Although most viral infections are self-limiting, there are types of HPV that can cause severe health problems such as cervical cancer, genital warts, and other life-threatening diseases.

The good news is that these diseases can be completely prevented with a vaccine. Thus, awareness on who needs to take the vaccine is important

1.Children (Ages 9-14 years) - Ideal Age Group

This is the best time to get vaccinated, as the immune system will be strongest and the vaccination will take place before the exposure to the virus.

Recommended for both girls and boys
Typically given as a 2-dose schedule
2. Adolescents & Young Adults (15-26 years)

Individuals who didn’t receive the vaccine in the early years will receive the vaccine in this group.

Provides strong protection against HPV-related diseases
Usually given as a 3-dose schedule
3. Adults (27-45 years)

Vaccination in this group will take place after a consultation with a doctor.

Effectiveness depends on prior exposure to HPV
Offers partial protection in many cases Males – Equally Important

HPV vaccination is not just for females.

Prevents Genital Warts and Cancer
Helps Reduce Transmission of HPV to Partners
Who Should Delay or Avoid the Vaccine?
Pregnant Women – Vaccination should be postponed
Individuals with Severe Allergic Reaction after Previous Doses
Individuals with Moderate to Severe Acute Illness. Conclusion
The HPV vaccine has the potential to fight several forms of cancer and infections.

The sooner the child is vaccinated, the better the outcome.
But even older individuals can benefit from the vaccine with the right medical advice.

Vaccinating the public and creating more awareness about the HPV vaccine can help minimize the effects of the diseases.

Have you or your family members received the HPV vaccine?
At what age do you think the vaccine would be most effective? Were you aware that men too should get the HPV vaccine?

Thanks for sharing. The vaccine is available but proper information regarding this is not available.

I think it is necessary but prior allergy testings should be done

This is amazing

Informative post. I think taking the HPV vaccine at an early age is more effective.
And also, many people are still not aware of that men should get vaccinated too.

Awareness programmes in schools, colleges, city clubs, town halls. Gram sabhas should be run in order to spread this knowledge.

I think that the effective age of vaccination will be 9-14 years.

Great overview. As a doctor I would like to emphasize on awareness on cervical cancer. Vaccines for this HPV infection is available at government and private setups. Recently govt of India has launched free HPV vaccination drive mainly targeting 14 years age group girls with the main objective to prevent cervical cancer. Awareness regarding this is definitely first step in prevention.

HPV vaccine is most effective when given at 9 -14 years of age, though anyone can getvaccinated after consultation.

To be honest, I was not aware that men :cowboy_hat_face: too can take this vaccine. :syringe:

HPV vaccine :syringe: :medical_symbol: is most effective if taken before potential exposure to the virus or before any sexual activity, offering the strongest immune response in early adolescence as rightly quoted in the post.:white_check_mark:

Thank you doc @Brunda for sharing this. :+1:

Like most other vaccinations, HPV should be administered between 9-14 years.

The HPV vaccine protects against genital warts and most cervical cancers, cancer of the vagina, vulva, penis or anus caused by HPV. The HPV vaccine also protects against mouth, throat, head and neck cancers caused by HPV.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests routine HPV vaccination at age 11 or 12. The ideal age for vaccination is before a person is sexually active.

The FDA approved the use of Gardasil 9 for males and females ages 9 to 45.

When I was a child this vaccine had just come in the market so my parents were a bit apprehensive. It is good that now awareness has increased and every newborn in my family has this in their vaccine schedule. I feel getting it in your childhood is the best time as it offers protection before any exposure can occur.

This kind of information is necessary to understand its rational use and effects! Thank you for sharing!

A very important and clearly explained topic. Highlighting that HPV vaccination is for both males and females—and that early vaccination offers the best protection—is especially valuable. Posts like this can really help improve awareness and prevention.

Delhi Govt. is providing HPV vaccines at empanelled hospitals. Great initiative.
