When System Fails Why Is Doctor The One To Pay?

A gynecologist work is to deliver a baby safely.

But what happens when a new born needs NICU care and the hospital doesn’t have that facilities?

This is what reportedly happened today in at a government hospital in Mumbai.

After delivering the baby the doctor realised that the new born requires a specialised neonatal care.Since the hospital didn’t have NICU facility, she advised the family to shift the baby to another hospital where the baby could receive the treatment properly.

It wasn’t a refusal to treatment.

It wasn’t a negligence.

It was the right medical decision taken based on the resources available in hospital.

But instead of asking why hospital lacked such critical facilities, the doctor became the target. She and her staffs were allegedly assaulted inside the hospital by the people who held her responsible for something that was never in their control.

Doctors don’t approve the hospital infrastructure.

They don’t approve budget

They don’t build NICU

They work with facilities that they are given and make decisions best for the patients.

If there is lack of infrastructure, who is to be held responsible for that? Doctor’s or System?

Before blaming a doctor please ask yourself

If the hospital doesn’t have NICU,What else could have a gynecologist done?

Its really sad to see the instant response for even a lack of infrastructure, is to blame the doctors. A doctor always suggest what’s best for their patients.

Exactly,Patient good health is for what we have invest so many years of our life and a lack of infra is not at all a doctor’s fault. @Akshaya

Antenatal transfer: refer high-risk mother to a facility with NICU before delivery, give corticosteroids for fetal lung maturity, stabilize, arrange safe transport, and coordinate with pediatric/neonatal team beforehand.

it is really sad!
i think it is very easy for everyone to just blame doctors in one or another way, they do not compare the situation, circumstances, infrastructure, they just directly blame doctor if something goes wrong.

Doctors are entitled to god but any mishap happens they treat bad to the only doctors once given god’s place.

Yess how much I could read and gather information was that they arranged transportation they also connected the hospital for NICU services in a nearby hospital.

Exactly, It’s not doctors fault always. They might be wrong at some point of time but blaming a doctor for things which are not in their hand is not fair.

Yes,true it should be handled by everyone.

But a doctor cannot build NICU in a government hospital they can only apply for requisition but ultimately it’s all on government approvals.

Very sad incident. If hospital does not have any facility, it is not doctors fault to transfer to other hospital. The relatives of patient should be explained and if still they abuse doctors then strict laws should be made to avoid such incidents.

It’s true that Doctors are easy target. If the baby needs NICU care and that is not available in the hospital, Then referring to other hospital is only in Doctors hand. What else could be done.
