Many people believe that individuals with different blood types should eat and avoid some specific food. This concept is known as blood type diet. It enhances health, maintains ideal weight and prevents many diseases.
According to WHO, blood-type diets advise individuals to eat according to their ABO blood type to improve their health and lower the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease.
A study was conducted on 1,455 subjects in Toronto Nutrigenomics and Health study for a month. Results were that Type- A diet was associated with lower BMI,waist circumference, bp, triglycerides,insulin. Type- AB had lower level of these biomarkers except BMI and waist circumference. Type- O diet was associated with lower triglycerides and no significant association was found for Type- B diet.
So what foods can we eat?
- Blood group O: High protein diet with lean meat, fish,vegetables and limited grains and diary.
- Blood group A: Plant based diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes with minimal meat.
- Blood group B: A balanced diet including dairy, meat, vegetables, grains while avoiding certain foods like chicken.
- Blood group AB: A combination of food recommend for blood type A and B.
