Recently, two drugs have been getting a lot of attention : Ozempic and Mounjaro.
Both are mainly used for type 2 diabetes, but they are now widely discussed because of their strong weight loss effects.
Because of this, they are no longer seen only as diabetes medicines. Many people are now looking at them as options for weight management too.
This is where the debate starts.
On one side, they are important medical advancements that can help patients with diabetes and obesity when used properly under medical supervision. On the other side, their growing popularity for weight loss alone raises concerns about overuse, self-demand, and use without proper need.
So my question is,
Are Ozempic and Mounjaro in India improving patient care, or are they slowly turning into trend-based drugs beyond their actual use?
Ozempic and Mounjaro are significant medical advancements that help improve patients’ health, especially for those suffering from diabetes and obesity. However, with the increasing popularity of slim body types, celebrities, influencers, and even teenagers are turning to Ozempic for rapid weight loss. This is concerning, as it raises issues of overconsumption and potential health risks. When these medications are used by individuals who do not medically require them, it can lead to shortages for those who genuinely depend on them.
This issue can be addressed through greater awareness and stricter regulations regarding the purchase and use of these drugs, ultimately ensuring better access for those in need.
Drugs like these are useful for patient having very poorly control diabetes and obesity which can beyond the hands of just diet & exercise..Because it’s action is to delay stomach empting, reduce appetite and regulate hunger..
But few people use it very irrationally - as trending thing for just to get slim & fit body in a faster way..they just know the superficial actions and use it.. Regulations for it’s use is very necessary.
i think more than diabetes people are using it for getting slim but its side effect is now easily seen which we call as ozempic face.
recently i came across a drug “BIMAGRUMAB” currently in phase 2 trial(by Eli Lily company). this drug mainly focuses on reducing the fat but reserving the muslce mass but also increases the muscle mass, overcoming the usually seen side effects of ozempic. but again regulation on usuage of drugs is important.
Ozempic and Mounjaro will definitely improve patients care but highly have the potential to turn into trend based drug. The proper usage of these drugs can be done with proper awareness and using proper guidelines in using these drugs. Proper regulations and guidelines help in safe and effective use of such drugs. In India such precautionary measures may go a long way from being misused and turning into a weight management trend.
While working as clinical documentation specialist for a US hospital, discussions about Manjauro and Ozempic were very common. From my understanding, the rise in use of these medications was staggering; however, the patients often suffered from side effects and too frequently. I believe these medications surely have their use, but we cannot ignore the fact that it is often used as a short cut over the proper treatment protocol.
Very well said! These drugs has been studied for over a decade and long term effects are also promising in reducing CVD. On the contrary weight reduction in those patients were the side effects of these drugs. which is helping a lot of people who genuinely needs to lose weight, such as in people with PCOS, insulin resistance, due to non-communicable diseases, and so on, given they are administered under supervision. Though its usage solely for asthetic purpose is very dangerous and portraying wrong message to the people which can cause more harm.
Earlier it was popular for hypertension but now its so popular for hair growth that many people are still unaware of the origin of drug . Ozempic is the new trendy drug as we say nowadays which is just popular because it helps people to loose weight as if that’s the only thing that matters obviously ignoring the side effects..
