What Is the GATE Exam and Why Should You Care?

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is conducted jointly by IITs and IISc, GATE is primarily for students aiming for postgraduate studies (M.Tech/Ph.D.), PSU recruitment, or even higher studies abroad (some international universities accept GATE scores!).

While it’s best known in core engineering fields, GATE also includes life sciences, biotechnology, and chemistry, making it highly relevant for science grads. A good GATE score can lead to admissions in top institutes, financial scholarships, or research fellowships under government bodies like CSIR, DRDO, or DBT.

What are your suggestions or tips to crack GATE ? Is taking a separate coaching necessary ?

Great question! Cracking GATE definitely takes smart planning but it’s very doable with the right strategy. Here are some tips:

1. Know the Syllabus Well: Start by thoroughly understanding the syllabus for your chosen subject. Stick to it and don’t waste time on irrelevant topics.

2. Strong Basics Matter: GATE focuses more on concepts than rote memorization. Make sure your fundamentals are clear, especially in key subjects.

3. Practice Previous Papers: Solve past 10 years’ GATE papers. It helps you understand the pattern, question style and important topics.

4. Take Mock Tests: Regular mock tests improve speed and time management. Analyze your mistakes and work on weak areas.

5. Make Short Notes: While studying, create quick revision notes or flashcards—super helpful during final weeks.

6. Be Consistent: Daily study for even 2–3 focused hours is better than irregular long hours.

Is coaching necessary?
Not always. If you’re self-disciplined and can follow a plan, many students crack GATE through self-study using good books and online resources (like NPTEL, YouTube lectures, etc.). However, coaching can help if you need structured guidance or struggle with certain subjects.
