Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. It can be caused by viruses, alcohol, drugs, autoimmune reactions, or metabolic disorders.
Types of Hepatitis

Viral Hepatitis (most common)

Hepatitis A (HAV):

Spread: Contaminated food/water (“fecal-oral route”).

Acute, usually self-limiting. No chronic disease.

Vaccine available.

Hepatitis B (HBV):

Spread: Blood, sexual contact, mother-to-child.

Can become chronic → cirrhosis, liver cancer.

Vaccine available.

Hepatitis C (HCV):

Spread: Blood transfusions, IV drug use, unsafe injections.

Often becomes chronic, may cause cirrhosis & cancer.

No vaccine, but curable with antivirals.

Hepatitis D (HDV):

Only occurs with Hepatitis B infection.

Makes disease more severe.

Prevented by HBV vaccine.

Hepatitis E (HEV):

Spread: Contaminated water, food.

Usually acute, self-limiting.

Dangerous in pregnancy.
