What does a degree teach beyond books and exams?

Graduation is often a phase similar to adolescence—where hopes are high and yet it’s easy to lose your direction. Graduation is the period of life that shapes our personality and our values and lays a foundation for our future selves.

As we step out of the school and home, the control of our life shifts into our hands. Living in a hostel, making and losing friends, handling problems on your own, dealing with exam pressure these experiences teach us more than a textbook ever can.

The most important lesson I learned during my graduation was choosing myself.

Graduation is a period when everything, from choosing your habits to choosing your company, is completely your choice. And our choices shape us into who we become.

We human beings crave companionship, which sometimes can lead to choosing the wrong company, depending too much on others, or falling into people-pleasing. These influences often take you off track and pull you away from your personal values and goals.

Over time, I learned that the most important relationship I can build is with myself.

And as soon as I began investing in myself—by prioritizing my health, giving sincere time to my studies, and staying aligned to my personal values—setting boundaries where required, I felt more content, complete, and confident in myself.

So, invest in yourself until you find the right people who help you grow and become a better version of yourself.

Investing in yourself is the biggest investment you can make, because while people may come and go, you are your constant one in life :heart_decoration:.

Tell me in the comments what lesson did you learn in your graduation beyond academics?

Yes :raising_hands:. Degree itself is not the important aspect of any course. The ability to adapt to the environment and the way of life is usually taught during this period. It helps us to embrace ourselves for adulthood.

Very interesting topic. I loved reading it.

If you ask me, a degree is discovering yourself, learning independence, and building resilience. But the experiences outside the classroom often shape one more deeply than any textbook ever could.

Sometimes we hesitate to invest in ourselves thinking about expenses but taking care of our health will only bring more output in the future.

Investing in health is free of cost. It’s about taking out 20-30 minutes for a walk or exercise and making the right food choices.

Great topic! A degree is more than books and exams - it’s a life phase that builds independence, resilience, time management, and self‑confidence. It teaches you to make your own choices, handle responsibilities, navigate challenges, and grow personally as well as socially. These experiences shape your character and future just as much as academic knowledge.
