Venereophobia is an excessive, often irrational fear of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs), usually after a sexual encounter thought to be risky.
Though recognised for over a century, it is still underdiagnosed, leaving many to suffer silently.
Who Gets Affected?
• More common in men (symptoms are more noticeable).
• Social stigma often prevents women from seeking help, but awareness is improving.
Symptoms
• Persistent worry, obsessive thoughts, anxiety, panic, or insomnia.
• Avoiding sex or social interactions, compulsive medical testing.
• Misinterpreting normal variations (like pearly penile papules) as STIs.
Causes
• Misinformation, past STI experiences, guilt or anxiety disorders, social stigma, and even alarming media campaigns.
Management
• Careful medical evaluation to rule out infection.
• Reassurance, counseling, and psychoeducation.
• Severe cases: cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or medication.
• Multidisciplinary clinics (dermatology + psychiatry) give best outcomes.
