Vaccines Do Not Fail in Labs, They Fail on the Road

Vaccine failure is always linked with laboratory techniques failure but most of the vaccines failure happen outside the labs that is during transportation. A vaccine that is perfectly manufactured can become useless if it is exposed to the wrong temperature for even a few hours. Globally, a large number of vaccine doses are wasted each year because cold chain systems break down, especially in regions with unreliable electricity and transport making it a global issue.

The COVID-19 pandemic made this problem impossible to ignore, as temperature-sensitive vaccines struggled to reach remote areas on time. Today, researchers are focusing on heat-stable formulations and better packaging rather than new vaccine targets which is the need of the hour because it is better to focus on dispensing rather than just formulating. These changes may not look revolutionary, but they could protect more lives than discovering another vaccine because we will be able to dispense it to diverse population. Sometimes, the real innovation lies in delivery, not discovery.

What are some areas to focus on while improving vaccines and making more practical to use ?

The only issue with vaccines is their inability to predict the long-term effects. This has led to widespread distrust among individuals who believe in myths that vaccines may cause various medical issues. Every vaccine must undergo rigorous clinical trials to gauge their long-term effects before they are approved for public use.

Most vaccine losses happen during transport and storage, not in labs.Improving cold chain reliability and delivery systems can save more lives than new formulations.

Improving vaccines design and efficacy through novel delivery methods- needle free delivery through sprays and patches which also allow self-administration; improved thermostability; single dose vaccines with longer efficacy are avenues that can be further explored. Improving supply chain operations and providing adequate training to vaccine providers are some other areas to be considered.
