A few years ago, I first came across the field of Occupational Therapy when a friend of mine wanted to pursue it as a career. Until then I was just aquainted with Physiotherapy. But that conversation made me realize how different these two fields are.
Physiotherapy mainly focuses on restoring physical movement, strength, flexibility in Patients. It reduces pain caused by injury, illness or disability. Physiotherapists use exercises, manual therapy and physical techniques to improve mobility and physical function.
Occupational Therapy, on the other hand, focuses on something deeper like functional independence of an individual. This includes helping individuals perform daily activities independently like cooking, writing, dressing.Occupational Therapy also forms a major part of mental health sciences. Patients affected by developmental disorders, neurological conditions, mental health issues or physical disabilities resort to Occupational therapy.
For example, after a stroke, a physiotherapist may help a patient walk again, while an occupational therapist may help them relearn how to hold a spoon, button a shirt or manage daily routines independently.
While their approaches may differ, their shared goal remains the same.In the end, both Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy contribute uniquely to patient recovery, rehabilitation and improve overall quality of life.
In which situations would a patient benefit more from Occupational Therapy than Physiotherapy or vice versa?
