Tooth names

Each tooth has a specific name and a number which dentist use to denote that tooth.
Central Incisor
Lateral Incisor
Canine
1st premolar
2nd premolar
1st molar
2nd molar
3rd molar


The commonly used numbering sysytem is FDI system.
Each tooth is given a specific number with 2 digits. First digit denotes the quadrant and second denotes the postion of tooth.
Eg . 11 is Right first central Incisor.

Yes patients sometimes get confused when we writer decay for 47. " Doctor we only have 32 teeth right". It’s actually the tooth number read as four-seven.
Fourh quadrant seventh tooth.

The teeth numbering system was so confusing as a fresher when u join the college…frankly even after two years.
