Sleep is considered a very essential part of one’s life. It is useful to rejuvenate one’s body, helps in improving brain health, prevents anxiety, stress, and depression, helps in maintaining one’s immune system, and plays a key role in supporting heart health. Scientific studies prove that improper and irregular sleep patterns cause cardiovascular diseases like heart attacks. But recent research suggests that as high as 38% of adults face disturbed sleep, and the leading cause is attributed to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
The diagnostic criteria for OSA are said to be based on the AHI index.
AHI means Apnea-Hypopnea Index.
Apnea refers to the complete cessation of breathing due to complete airway obstruction during sleep.
Hypopnea is episodes of labored breathing with a low respiratory rate that do not meet the metabolic needs and are attributed to partial obstruction of the airway.
The AHI index is the combined number of apneic and hypopneic events that are recorded per hour of sleep during a sleep study. This diagnostic test can be carried out as either:
Inside a sleep laboratory facility by polysomnography testing
Through a home sleep apnea testing machine
Based on this diagnostic testing, sleep disorders are classified as follows:
Insomnia
Sleep breathing disorders – sleep apnea
Sleep movement disorders – bruxism, meaning the habit of grinding or clenching of teeth (mostly people do this subconsciously).
Parasomnias
Circadian rhythm disorders
Hypersomnia – increased daytime sleepiness even after adequate sleep during nighttime.
Diagnosis-- AHI index:
Mild OSA – 5 to 15 events/hr
Moderate OSA – more than 15 to 30 events/hr
Severe OSA – more than 30 events/hr
Questions to think about
1.How important is sleep according to you? and how many hours of sound sleep do you have every day?
2.Did you ever face breathlessness during your sleep and get up gasping for air ?
Sleep is often underestimated, but its impact on overall health—especially heart health—is profound. Conditions like OSA silently affect a large population, yet remain underdiagnosed.
Understanding concepts like AHI and recognizing early signs can truly change outcomes. This highlights how important awareness and timely diagnosis are in preventing long-term complications.
Sleep is indeed important and its importance can be best explained by a student struggling to manage assignments, lectures, notes and personal life which almost becomes non-existential while pursuing higher studies. I believe 6-8 hours of sleep is necessary to have a good health and efficient functionong of body. However it depends from person to person some require more sleep to feel fresh .
I think sleep is one of the most underrated parts of health, and conditions like sleep apnea often go unnoticed even though they can seriously affect daily life and overall health.
Very informative post. Sleep is something people often ignore until it starts affecting physical and mental health. Conditions like obstructive sleep apnea can easily go unnoticed for years, which makes awareness and early diagnosis extremely important for overall well-being and long-term cardiovascular health.
