Sleep Apnea: When Your Breathing Pauses While You Sleep

Do you snore loudly, wake up feeling tired, or feel sleepy even after a full night’s sleep? You might be experiencing sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. Each pause lowers oxygen levels, causing your brain to briefly wake you up so you can breathe again—often without you even realizing it

Common Symptoms

  • Loud snoring
  • Pauses in breathing during sleep
  • Gasping or choking during sleep
  • Morning headaches
  • Dry mouth on waking
  • Daytime fatigue and sleepiness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Irritability and mood changes

Risk Factors

  • Obesity
  • Large tonsils
  • Family history of sleep apnea
  • High blood pressure or heart disease
  • Increasing age

Why It Matters

Untreated sleep apnea can increase the risk of:
High blood pressure
Heart disease and stroke
Irregular heart rhythms
Excessive daytime sleepiness and accidents

Treatment Can Help

Managing sleep apnea can improve sleep quality, boost energy levels, and reduce the risk of serious health complications.

This is such a major issue people are really unaware about this. They find snoring normal, they find waking up mid night is normal but really don’t understand this is such serious issue.

This can lead to so many life threatening disorders that people cannot think about and also are unaware to correlate or link.

I wish people in India start having awareness about this.

Many people are shy and feel ashamed talking about snoring at night. Awareness about snoring causing sleep apnea is required. Early detection with sleep study and treatment would help prevent risk of heart disease and stroke. Snoring is not a disease but sleep apnea symptom which can be treated using oral appliances or CPAP machine based on type of sleep apnea diagnosed.
