A few months back, a video went viral on social media — a penguin walking away from its colony toward the interior Antarctic mountains.
Do you know why that 19-year-old video became so viral?
Because it says more about humans than the penguin itself.
Humans have a psychological tendency called anthropomorphism — our habit of projecting human emotions, intentions, and stories onto non-human beings.
That’s why so many people felt emotional and curious while watching the penguin walk alone toward the mountains. People immediately started wondering:Was it lost? Curious? Lonely? Brave? Different?
Interestingly, studies in animal behavior suggest that not every “odd” movement is meaningless. Exploration, navigation errors, curiosity, environmental changes, or stress responses can all influence solitary movement in many species.
Maybe that penguin was simply walking.
But perhaps the reason the video resonated with millions is because many people silently relate to the feeling of moving differently from everyone else.
Sometimes the internet doesn’t go viral because of an animal.Sometimes it goes viral because humans see themselves in it.
Have you heard about “anthropomorphism” before? And what was your reaction when you first saw that viral penguin video?
I feel this is true because humans naturally connect emotions with stories and situations around them.Maybe people related to that penguin because at some point, many of us also feel different, lost, or separated while finding our own path.
Yes, anthropomorphism is actually very common. I think people connected so deeply with that penguin because, in some way, many of us know what it feels like to walk a different path from everyone else.
Really interesting perspective. The penguin became memorable not because we knew its story, but because we instinctively created one. Anthropomorphism is such a powerful part of human psychology, and this example shows how easily we project our own feelings of curiosity, isolation, independence, or uncertainty onto an animal simply walking in a different direction.
When I watched that video, it made me realize that no matter how lonely or different your journey feels, or how solitary the path you choose may be, you don’t stop moving forward. Even when no one is walking beside you, you continue to reach for what you set out to achieve. That thought stayed with me the most and resonated deeply.
