So what do you do for work?” We ask this question to so many people with such curiosity. We can see a different spark in the eyes of those replying and telling us about their careers. Maybe because our careers mean a lot to us. What we choose to do to earn respectable money is one of the few things in our life that are in our own hands.
Right from the age when our minds start getting influenced, we start wondering and asking ourselves “what will I be”. We start a very long, tedious and tiring quest to choose our career. But while navigating through various options especially in our student life, there are so many challenges, doubts and fears that we face.
Pressure to stand out and be unique: The pressure to be unique and not follow the crowd is real! Many of us want to stand out of the crowd and go down the unexplored road. Not being able to stand out and being one of the many sheep is one such fear or pressure that we subject ourselves to.
What if I don’t succeed?: Sometimes, we have our careers decided, we have a plan to follow, but we underestimate our own capabilities leading to a fear or doubt - will i be successful.
Living up to the expectations: Lastly, the expectations that our loved ones or we have from ourselves, sometimes force us to be afraid of not being able to fulfill or do justice to those expectations.
How to cope with these fears?
First and foremost, know that being afraid while exploring various career paths is valid and normal.
Secondly, don’t let the fears and doubts stay unheard. There may be other companions sailing through the same boat and sharing our thoughts with them reduces our worry.
Seek help wherever required, from a career counsellor or a person who is already working in the field of your interest.
Explore various career paths of interest by taking internships to choose a unique and made-for-you career.
Lastly, instead of worrying about ‘what if it doesn’t work out’ , let’s ask ourselves ‘what if it does!’
