Whenever I feel stressed, overwhelmed, or mentally exhausted, I notice myself doing something unusual—I start cleaning my room.
It may sound strange, but organizing my desk, folding clothes, or simply putting things back in place somehow makes me feel calmer. What I once thought was just a habit actually has some science behind it.
Research suggests that cluttered environments can increase stress and make it harder for the brain to focus. When our surroundings feel chaotic, our mind often feels the same way. On the other hand, organizing a space can create a sense of control, especially during times when life feels unpredictable.
Cleaning also involves physical movement and goal-oriented tasks. Even small accomplishments, such as making the bed or arranging a study table, can trigger a sense of satisfaction and reduce feelings of mental overload.
Of course, cleaning is not a cure for stress or anxiety. But for many people, it can serve as a simple coping mechanism that helps clear both physical and mental clutter.
I have realized that sometimes I am not just cleaning my room.I am also trying to organize my thoughts.
Perhaps there is a reason why a tidy space often feels like a fresh start.
When you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed, do you find yourself cleaning and organizing your surroundings, or do you cope in a different way?
There’s a beautiful neurological reason why sorting things out makes us feel lighter, just like @marlapalle12 mentioned. Cleaning breaks down an overwhelming day into small, highly predictable, goal-oriented tasks. Folding a shirt or organising a desk gives the brain a series of micro-dopamine hits from achieving tangible ‘wins’, which directly counters the helplessness of stress.
Organizing that space around you is like a therapy sometimes. Unintentionally, after that cleaning you might become a bit more relaxed and analyze the stress or situation more clearly.
Yes yes yes! Soo true and this is exactly me, every time i feel something unusual, things or works not going how i want , anxiety or any state of mind which is unusual, i simply start cleaning or organising my stuffs.
