Health care – helping and caring for someone whose suffering, or trying to remove or reduce his/her dis-ease is something not only reserved for doctors. People with empathy and humanity can significantly bring positive changes in lives of people or society like the people’s President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.
The missile man created light-weight, carbon-fiber based orthopedic calipers for children for whom the heavy calipers were more of a burden than support, he also took initiative in jointly developing the first made-in-India Kalam-Raju coil coronary stent with collaboration between DRDO and NIMS, which made PCI procedures affordable for many patients as its cost was almost half the price of imported stents (from 75000 to 10000) [times of India]. He never patented his invention in order to keep it accessible for the economically challenged individuals of the society. This was the huge contribution to health care of a person who had dedicated his life and learning to engineering and physics but his empathy made him do something out of his expertise, more correctly utilize his expertise in order to help the suffering individuals and make some positive impact in their life. Every individual having some power and capacity can bring some changes for betterment of others, and joint efforts will help us achieve a society where no individual will be compelled to suffer at least from a preventable or curable disease.
