The Lesson of the Two Drops of Oil

One story in The Alchemist stayed with me.

A wise man asks a boy to walk around a palace while carrying a spoon with two drops of oil.

The first time, the boy focuses only on protecting the oil. He comes back without spilling it—but he didn’t notice the beauty of the palace at all.

The second time, he looks around and admires everything in the palace. But when he returns, the oil is gone.

The wise man then says something simple but powerful:
“The secret of happiness is to see all the marvels of the world and never forget the drops of oil on the spoon.”
That line made me think about balance.

Sometimes we become so focused on responsibilities that we forget to experience life. Other times we chase dreams and experiences so much that we forget the responsibilities we are carrying.

Maybe the real challenge in life is learning how to do both.
To explore the world while still protecting the things that matter in our hands.

Do you think it’s harder to chase dreams or to balance dreams with responsibilities?

It was a much needed reminder, thank you sharing. We often don’t live life while chasing dreams and when we sit to look behind the only thing is unlived life. So, balance is really important, living life while chasing dreams.

This is post is very deep and meaningful ,It beautifully explains how life is really about balance, holding on to our responsibilities while still allowing ourselves to experience the beauty and opportunities around us. In many ways, balancing dreams with responsibilities is the real challenge, because both are important parts of a meaningful life.

That’s a beautiful reflection. The story really captures the essence of balance how happiness lies in holding on to what matters while still embracing the marvels around us. Your takeaway reminds us that life isn’t about choosing one or the other, but about learning the art of carrying both with care.

Yes. I heard this story before (in a motivational speech quoting from Alchemist book). but I appreciate the thought of sharing with us/others what you loved from the reading is really awesome. I appreciate for that.

With your permission I am adding another poem in Tamil for your punch line “Do you think it’s harder to chase dreams or to balance dreams with responsibilities?”

I have translated the above poem in English also for your understadning:

Dreams

Dreams are the night’s shadow-stage drama,
Forgotten tongues, wild sky symphonies.
Soaring over green hills,
We unravel star secrets.

Reality bends, the soul wanders
In search of the unknown world.

To balance the dreams, you have to struggle. The struggles teach you lessons of life. This is the reality.
