The Lab Accident That Taught Me More Than Any Practical Could

Sometimes, the most memorable lessons in a laboratory don’t come from the experiment itself. They come from the moment something doesn’t go according to plan. During one of my practicals, I was filtering diluted sodium hydroxide (NaOH) using a microfilter. Everything seemed routine until the filter became clogged. Suddenly, the pressure caused the solution to splash outward, reaching my eyes, mouth and the area around me. For a moment, it was honestly scary. The experiment that seemed completely normal had turned into a safety incident within seconds. And that experience changed the way I look at laboratory work.

What did I learn? The first thing I realised was that “diluted” does not mean “harmless.” Sodium hydroxide is a caustic substance and can cause serious irritation or burns, particularly to the eyes.

Sometimes, as students, we become curious and lean closer to see what’s happening. We focus so much on getting the procedure right that we forget to think about what could happen if something suddenly fails. After this incident, I became much more conscious about:

Wearing appropriate eye protection

Maintaining a safe distance from an active setup

Not peeping or leaning over equipment unnecessarily

Checking filters, glassware and connections before applying pressure

Understanding the hazards of even familiar chemicals

Knowing exactly where the eyewash station and emergency equipment are

Using appropriate PPE throughout the practical, not just during the “dangerous-looking” steps

Chemical-splash guidance specifically emphasises appropriate eye/face protection, and emergency eyewash facilities should be readily accessible wherever corrosive exposure is possible.

The lesson wasn’t “be afraid of the lab.” It was actually the opposite. A good scientist shouldn’t be afraid to experiment but should understand risk before curiosity takes over. Laboratory safety isn’t something we remember only after an accident. It should become part of our experimental thinking:

Before starting → What can go wrong?

During the experiment → Am I positioned safely?

If something fails → Do I know what to do immediately?

That accident taught me something that I don’t think I’ll forget anytime soon:

In a laboratory, curiosity helps us learn but safety makes sure we’re there to learn the next experiment too.

And honestly, sometimes a small accident teaches you to respect the laboratory far more than a perfectly successful practical ever could.

Every experienced researcher has that one defining lab mishap that permanently altered their respect for bench protocols and safety checklists.
