THE FEAR THAT STOPS YOU – THE FEAR OF IMPERFECTION

What is fear of imperfection?

It is a type of phobia. Psychologists call this fear Atelophobia.

What does this phobia do?

It makes you delay starting any task because you are afraid the result will not be good enough. You feel that if you start a task, it must end perfectly. But you know you can’t attain perfection.
So you don’t start.

If you start a task and, in between, feel that it needs a lot of energy because you keep changing it multiple times to make it perfect, it exhausts you before completing it.

So you leave it unfinished.

You stop because you feel:
Why waste energy when I can’t reach perfection?

But what is this fear actually doing?

It is stopping you from ever starting. It doesn’t protect you. It traps you in preparation mode.

You prepare so much that you get exhausted before even trying.

So what is the solution?

Start even if you know it will be imperfect.

Because imperfection builds skill.

The way I know this post is not perfect, but I am still writing and posting it.

I myself struggle with this fear. Many times I thought of not posting. But I told myself that the urge for perfection will stop me again.

You can also:

  1. Share your work with someone you trust.

  2. Address your fear directly. Journaling helps.

  3. Talk about it instead of hiding it.

Do you ever feel fear of imperfection delays your actions?
