Teeth Cleaning Vs Whitening : Know the difference

People always confuse scaling with whitening.
:tooth: Whitening lightens tooth shade using chemical agents. It is a long term temporary solution to brighten your teeth.
:soap: Scaling improves gum health by removing deposits on your teeth and gums. It doesnt whiten your teeth. Just the extra tartar is removed from your teeth.

In some cases with extreme staining due to smoking or other reasons, patients benefit from normal scaling also . They get a cleaner appearance and a better smile after scaling too.

Yeah, discoloration caused by extrinsic stains (eg: tea, coffee, tobacco stains) can be removed by scaling/ cleaning that naturally improves the appearance of the teeth.

Scaling vs Whitening: Not the Same!

:sparkles: Whitening = Cosmetic. Lightens tooth shade using bleaching agents.
:toothbrush: Scaling = Clinical. Removes tartar and plaque to improve gum health—not to whiten teeth.

Let’s stop confusing a dental cleaning with a makeover. Both matter, but for different reasons!

Before starting a procedure patient clearly needs to know about scaling and tooth whitening so that he understands the results

Exactly! Whitening is all about brightening the tooth color, while scaling focuses on cleaning and improving gum health without changing the shade. :tooth::sparkles:

Only the extrinsic stains (which occur only on the surface) can be removed with scaling, whereas the intrinsic stains(internal discoloration) cannot be removed.
