Lance Armstrong is an American former professional road racing cyclist. He won the Tour de France seven consecutive times from 1999 to 2005.
What happened to Lance Armstrong?
Doping Scandal: In 2012, after an investigation into doping allegations, He was banned for life from sports and stripped of all seven of his Tour de France titles as well as his Olympic medal.
He also lost major endorsements from Nike and settled a lawsuit with the U.S. government for $5 million in 2018.
Confession: He publicly confessed to using EPO, blood transfusions, and testosterone in 2013, in an interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Doping methods used by Lance Armstrong:
Erythropoietin (EPO): A synthetic hormone that increases red blood cell production, leading to an increase in oxygen delivery to muscles.
Blood Transfusions: Artificially increased red blood cell volume and stamina through self-infusions and homologous transfusions.
Testosterone: Injections used for fast recovery, building strength, and maintaining energy levels.
Human Growth Hormone (HGH): Administered HGH to increase muscle recovery and repair tissue.
Corticosteroids: Used to reduce inflammation from physical stress during long tours.
This case is a perfect example of misusing science for one’s own benefit. He broke the trust of his fans. A cancer survivor, successful athlete, and role model suddenly became the most hated athlete.
Moral of the story: Science is a powerful tool, but its application is in our hands. Power always comes with great responsibility.
