Stop Scrubbing: Why Your Brushing Technique Might Be Hurting You

Proper oral hygiene is the cornerstone of a healthy smile, yet many people unknowingly sabotage their dental health through improper brushing techniques. While the intention is to clean, aggressive or incorrect movements can lead to significant, often irreversible, damage to the gums and teeth.

The Impact of “Over-Brushing”-

One of the most common mistakes is abrasive scrubbing. Using excessive pressure or a stiff-bristled brush doesn’t make teeth cleaner; instead, it acts like sandpaper on delicate tissues.

  • Gingival Recession: Constant friction can cause the gum line to retreat, exposing the sensitive roots of the teeth. Unlike skin, gums do not “grow back” once they have receded significantly.

  • Tooth Sensitivity: As gums recede and enamel wears thin (a process known as abrasion), the underlying dentin is exposed. This leads to sharp pain when consuming hot, cold, or sweet substances.

  • Cervical Lesions: Aggressive horizontal sawing can create notches near the gum line, weakening the tooth structure.

The Danger of Missing the Mark-
Conversely, a technique that is too superficial or neglects the gingival margin (where the tooth meets the gum) allows plaque to thrive.

  • Gingivitis and Periodontitis: Plaque buildup at the gum line triggers inflammation. If not removed gently but effectively, this can escalate from bleeding gums (gingivitis) to bone loss (periodontitis).
  • Wedge-shaped Defects: Focusing only on the flat surfaces of the teeth while skipping the contours allows bacteria to colonize protected “pockets,” leading to localized infections.

A Better Approach-
To protect your oral health, transition from “scrubbing” to massaging. Use a soft-bristled brush at a 45-degree angle toward the gum line, employing small, circular vibratory motions. This disrupts plaque biofilm without harming the soft tissue.

Informative, will certainly inculcate this brushing technique.

Informative!

Very informative. I never knew about side effects of brushing hard.

Interesting!!! Thank you for the advice, it will help many to save their teeth.

Using the correct brushing technique and soft bristled toothbrush is essential to maintain good oral hygiene. Its important to remember that tooth structure lost to aggressive scrubbing can never be regenerated. :white_check_mark: :tooth:
