Brush Smarter, Not Harder: Master the perfect Brushing Technique

Brushing the teeth is something we follow as a regular regime, but are we doing it correctly?

Proper brushing to remove the sticky layer on the teeth is essential to protect the gums and preventing cavity.

Here are the simple steps to follow to protect your smile

  1. Choose the right toothbrush : Opt for soft bristles to reduce the wear of teeth and small head so as to access all the areas.
2. Positioning : Place the brush at 45 degree to the gumline as this is the culprit area where the plaque is neglected and use gentle vibrating circular motions and followed by sweeping away from the gum-line. For upper teeth ,sweep from top to bottom and for lower teeth sweep from bottom to top.Repeat this in all front and back teeth of upper and lower jaw.
Key attention should be given to the chewing surfaces of teeth which is often neglected.

3. Toothpaste: Choose a toothpaste which contains Fluoride of atleast 1350 ppm of Fluoride for Adults and use a pea sized amount. Children under age 3 should use only a smear and this should be supervised.

4. Timing: Brush for atleast 2 minutes twice a day.

5. Change your toothbrush every 3 months.

Further effective oral hygiene measure includes flossing , using mouthwash, cleaning the tongue and interdental brushing. Note that the brushing technique varies for children and those with gum problems.

When was the last time you paid attention to how you brush? Are you brushing out of habit or brushing with purpose?

Brushing with purpose, using a specified technique, is the only way the pesky plaque within the gingival sulcus can be removed. Brushing just as a duty, without any direction of use, could end up harming the tooth structure.
