Starting The Day In Healthy Way - Right From India's Southern Part!

Being an Indian, we have multiple options of food and that too at different times in single day and if we talk about starting the day with healthy food/ diet options, South Indian Food is one of the most preferred, especially for breakfast meal. South Indian food is based on steam-cooking and fermentation process, which make it nutrient-rich, easy to digest and a healthy meal overall. Most common South Indian breakfast dishes may include idli, dosa, sambar. Some of the important health benefits of South Indian breakfast (in fact, this cuisine at anytime of the day) are as follows:

  • It is gut-friendly and helps in maintaining good digestive health as the process of fermentation (in making idli, dosa) produces probiotics which is quite beneficial for the human digestive system.
  • It also helps in weight management as the high fiber and protein content (sambar- lentils) helps in avoidance of over-eating.
  • Ragi Dosa, having low Glycemic Index is considered to be good for diabetics as it helps in maintaining sugar levels.
  • It is a multi-nutrient cuisine, all at once, such as lentils rich in protein, rice/millets rich in carbohydrates, spices (turmeric, cumin) have antioxidants and coconut having healthy fats.
  • Steam cooked (idli) are easy to digest and thus suitable for all ages (infants and elderly).

However, some concerns regarding these food items are also there which need to be taken care of, such as over-fermentation may spoil the food, high oil content in deep fried food items, adulteration in some products, etc. may lead to health issues like acidity, bloating or other long-term health risks. So, a balanced intake of South Indian food items, prepared with scientifically proven healthy parameters, can give a lot of benefit to the body along with taste to the tongue

Share your opinion on South Indian cuisine and especially while considering for the breakfast meal and also, any other cuisine or diet which you consider as a healthy and whole-some option to have in morning.

Totally agree with your point as the South Indian food has a lot of pre as well as probiotics which are gut friendly. Very rich in fibers which help in proper digestion of food and mich more healthier nutrients. But sometimes it may not have adequate protein, as pulses in sambhar don’t carry much protein and are considered as a source of carbohydrates. So, just a good portion of protein along with any south indian dish of your choice would be a perfect way to complete your nutrients for the day.

The first meal of the day determines how the entire day runs.South Indian breakfast sure is healthy but there’s a need to check for spoilage of food.
