Spinal anaesthesia and the most common myth

Spinal anaesthesia and the most common myth

Spinal anaesthesia is mainly given to women undergoing a C-section or epidural in case of a patient undergoing a normal delivery. But many people still believe that receiving spinal anaesthesia will lead to lifelong back pain, nerve damage, or even weight gain. However, most people are not aware of the actual causes of back pain. There can be many reasons, like weight gain post-pregnancy, constant feeding and stress, and carrying the child the entire day. The whole physiology of the body changes from the beginning of pregnancy, and it may take years for a mother to return to her pre-pregnancy state.

It is important to educate pregnant women about the safety of spinal anaesthesia and its significantly lower risk of adverse effects compared to general anaesthesia. The belief that spinal anaesthesia inevitably causes back pain is an old myth, and it is high time we debunk it.

Have you heard about any other myths related to spinal anaesthesia?

MBH/PS

Yes, back pain is the most common myth post spinal anesthesia. Educating women regarding the lifestyle habits postpartum is an important factor in avoiding back pain caused by many other contributing factors. Women undergo a major change in their lifestyle, including impacts on their mental health postpartum, which may lead to sedentary lifestyles compared to women who have undergone a normal delivery. Thereby, guiding them for better recovery helps a lot.
