Small movements, big impact: The power of NEAT

We believe that spending an hour at the gym and engaging in high intensity workouts is all that we need to stay healthy and active. In this quest we often overlook the most powerful and simple ways to remain active. This is where NEAT comes in.

So, what is NEAT?

NEAT stands for Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. The energy our body utilizes for all physical activities apart from exercise, sleeping and eating. This includes all the small movements and activities we perform throughout the day, such as

  • Walking around home or office

  • Standing while walking or talking

  • Doing household chores like cleaning and gardening

  • Playing with children or pets

  • Fidgeting at our desk

  • Taking stairs

How can NEAT be helpful?

NEAT will not produce any drastic changes and is not a replacement for cardio and strength training like exercises. But cumulative effects of these small activities will give our body an extra edge by burning more calories. Moreover, a study published in 2023 revealed that prolonged sitting for eight hours and more a day can lead to adverse changes in cholesterol and BMI, even if recommended 150 minutes of exercise per week is met.

What are the ways to boost NEAT?

  • Take stairs instead of an elevator

  • Walk to your colleagues desk instead of sending emails

  • Walk for errands instead of driving

  • Tap your knees under your desk

  • Perform some household chores while watching TV

Bottom line

Small actions may seem insignificant in isolation but when practiced regularly they can bring about meaningful changes.

What are your thoughts? Are we missing out on these small actions?

MBH/PS

Absolutely, NEAT is something many people overlook while focusing only on gym workouts. These small, everyday movements may not feel like much, but they add up and help counter the effects of sitting for long hours. Simple actions like taking the stairs, walking during calls, or doing chores can keep the body active throughout the day. It’s true that NEAT isn’t a replacement for structured exercise, but it complements it beautifully. By weaving these small habits into daily life, staying active becomes effortless rather than something limited to one hour at the gym.
