Between 1915-1927, Encephalitis Lethargica infected October 1 million people worldwide.

It was said that the movement of troops across Europe during World War I likely facilitated the spread of encephalitis lethargica.

Appeared as a neurological symptoms with varying diagnosis such as meningitis, multiple sclerosis, and delirium;however none of them matched well into any known diagnostic scheme. Patients developed extreme drowsiness and tremors appearing to fall into a deep sleep that could last for weeks or months.Looked like trapped within bodies that refused to move.

Survivors faced secondary horror- postencephalitic parkinsonism,oculogyric crises,significant personality changes and/or other disabilities.

It emerged,devastated a generation and disappeared without a trace. It teaches us that medicine is not just about answers but about learning to live with unknown.

I had never heard about Encephalitis Lethargica before reading this post. It’s frightening how a disease could affect millions, leave people trapped in their own bodies, and then disappear without clear answers. The part about survivors developing parkinson- like symptoms and personality change was especially heartbreaking. This reminds us how much medicine still doesn’t fully understand about the brain and neurological disorders. Really informative and thought provoking post.
