Skin Whitening Creams - Major Health Hazards
Recently, I had a casual conversation with an auto driver I know, and he told me that his nephew was hospitalised due to a major kidney issue. As we spoke further, I learnt that he was a 15-year-old boy who had suddenly fallen ill due to nephrotic syndrome.
Out of curiosity, I asked whether the boy had been taking any muscle-building protein powders, as teenagers are obsessed with fitness and the gym. But that was not the issue.
Then I asked him whether he had used any skin creams. Then I was shocked to hear that the boy purchased some cream for acne from Amazon, and in two weeks, his acne cleared and his complexion became lighter. So he continued to use it, and he started using the second bottle.
Soon after that, he was seriously ill and he was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome. The physicians have also asked about his history and traced his condition back to the skin-whitening cream he had used. Doctors have reported an increase in kidney disease among young individuals using skin whitening creams.
Reason for kidney damage
The skin whitening cream contains a heavy metal, mercury, which can block melanin synthesis by inhibiting tyrosinase, leading to serious health risks. It affects the skin, nervous system, liver, kidneys, and eyes. Researchers have found a direct relationship between nephrotic syndrome and some skin whitening creams. Heavy metal screening of blood and urine samples of these patients revealed high levels of mercury.
Caution
So, the application of skin whitening cream should be done with caution. Please avoid using fairness creams promoted by influencers; always get an expert opinion. Health should be given prime importance and not fairness. True beauty lies in healthy skin.
