Sitting for Hours: The Hidden Health Risk We Often Ignore

Yesterday, I was traveling on a bus for nearly three hours. While observing the driver, I noticed how long he had to remain seated with very little movement. It made me think about bus drivers, truck drivers, office workers, and software professionals who spend 10–16 hours a day sitting because of their jobs.

Prolonged sitting isn’t just uncomfortable—it can increase the risk of back pain, neck pain, poor posture, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and even deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in some individuals.

As healthcare professionals, we often focus on treating diseases, but preventing them is equally important. Simple habits like taking short breaks, stretching, maintaining good posture, and staying physically active can make a significant difference.

My Perspective

That bus journey reminded me that sometimes the biggest health risks are not dramatic—they’re part of our daily routine. A job may require us to sit for long hours, but our body still needs movement.

If your work or studies involve prolonged sitting, what do you do to keep yourself active throughout the day?

my work often involves prolonged sitting during case reviews, documentation, and study sessions. To stay active, I make it a habit to take short walking breaks every hour, use the stairs whenever possible, stay hydrated, and perform simple stretching exercises between tasks. Even a few minutes of movement helps improve focus, reduce fatigue, and maintain overall well-being
