Signs that should never be ignored
Certain symptoms can never be ignored. These warning signals should be identified as soon as possible to prevent further damage. These signs must not only be known by healthcare workers but also by the general public so that appropriate action can be taken. Ignoring them or waiting too long can lead to serious complications.
Chest Pain
Chest pain could indicate heart diseases such as a heart attack, especially if it feels like a pressure or squeezing sensation over the chest. The medical terminology appropriate for this would be “Angina pectoris”. Though it may appear similar to acid reflux in certain cases, being cautious could help avoid medical bills later.
It could indicate various other conditions like
- Peptic ulcer
- Tuberculosis
- Pneumonia
- Pericoronitis
Seek urgent care if it’s accompanied by:
- Shortness of breath
- Pain radiating to the arm, jaw, neck, or back
- Nausea, sweating, or dizziness
Sudden Weakness, Numbness, or Trouble Speaking
It could be a serious indicator of stroke. The diagnosis is confirmed if it is accompanied by
- Face drooping on one side
- Arm or leg weakness
- Slurred or confused speech
- Sudden vision problems
Persistent Fever
Persistent fever could suggest inflammation, infection, or a compromised immune status. Seek medical advice if:
- Fever lasts longer than 3 days
- It’s higher than 103°F (39.4°C)
- It’s accompanied by dizziness, rash, confusion, or severe pain
Unintentional Weight Loss
Losing weight without any major reason suddenly could be linked with
- Thyroid disorders
- Diabetes
- Digestive diseases
- Cancer
- Depression
Losing more than 5% of body weight in 6–12 months should be evaluated.
New or Changing Lumps and Unhealing Ulcers/Wounds
A lump that keeps on increasing in size or abnormal behavior could be linked to cancer proliferation. A ulcer or a wound may usually heal by itself within 7 days. If any wound remains unhealed and open, it could also be a sign of cancer and requires immediate medical intervention.
Shortness of Breath
Breathing difficulty could indicate various conditions like heart problems, lung conditions, infections, blood clots, or asthma.
Get checked urgently if:
- It comes on suddenly
- It occurs at rest
- It worsens quickly
- You feel chest tightness or faint
