Superfetation and Heterotopic Pregnancy in a Patient with ART
Superfetation
When a patient conceived for a second time while already pregnant with the first pregnancy. However, they are not considered twins.
Heterotopic Pregnancy
One embryo is developing in the uterus, and the other is developing outside the uterus, likely in the fallopian tube. This situation might be related to the development of twins.
The risk for both conditions increases with ART and IVF. Management is via a combination of expectant management and potentially surgical intervention. Diagnosis is difficult since symptoms of early pregnancy can overlap with those of other conditions, making it difficult to diagnose.
