Safe water or just looks like it ? World Water Day Awareness

Today , 22nd March is World Water Day.

We know the importance of clean drinking water and we constantly work towards better sources and purification methods. But what if the water you trust every day carried something invisible, but your body would reveal it months later?

Guinea Worm disease is now nearly eradicated, but its a strong reminder of why safe, clean drinking water matters.

In the past, people in some affected regions in Africa unknowingly drank contaminated water that contained small larvae. Inside the body, these parasitic larvae would grow for up to a year. Then a worm exits from the skin, causing painful blisters and swelling. We see that the disease increases the intensity of symptoms like joint pain, vomiting, eye swelling, and others. The open wound that is made by the worm on the skin can get infected, leading to permanently damaged joints due to inflammation. There is no vaccination or medicine to prevent this, so drinking only clean and safe water is the solution . Due to advancements in water purification methods and increased awareness, there have been no recent cases of Guinea worm disease.

Were you aware of a disease like this? How often do you think about whether your drinking water is truly purified?

Very informative post and it’s true we often neglect and think the water we drink is totally purified though it carries invisible microorganisms that enter our body and causes diseases .

Insightful article. Clean drinking water is human fundamental right yet nearly a quarter of the global population doesn’t have access to this.

Horrifying

I am well aware of parasitology and thus, I always stress over clean drinking water. At the same time, I think we should also focus on preserving fresh water resources after the water shortage crisis. Contaminated or depleted water sources are unfit for consumption, yet scarcity often forces people to rely on these unsafe supplies. This issue is compounded by failing infrastructure that cannot treat/distribute clean water to growing populations. Ultimately, this leads to increasing diseases.

Very informative, truly clean drinking water is very important for all of us. We need to emphasis on drinking clean purified water, regularly cleaning our water purifier and regular monitoring of purified water as well to unsure proper functioning of the purifier.

This is very underrated information . We often drink water completely relying on the government that they must be providing us with clean water. It is undoubtedly their duty to provide the citizens with clean drinking water.
This post is reminding me of one such incident that took place in my town due to the ejection of sewage in to river . The water was then treated in the so called governmental setup , but lead to a major increase in the cases of jaundice in the entire city . A major population was having jaundice due to the unclean drinking water that was being supplied .
Later on, the sewage are directed to other location and then the situation got controlled.
So , government authorities should keep a check and we should also drink only filtered or boiled water .

That looks so painful. But thankfully awareness regarding clean and safe drinking water has reduced it. And it may be second human disease after small pox, to be eradicated from earth.

Very impactful—great reminder that clear water isn’t always safe.

Very informative. Even if we purify the water, improper storage could affect its quality before consumption.

informative post. it’s a good reminder that even water we trust can carry harmful, invisible microbes if it’s not properly purified.

In a world where water pollution is alarmingly rising, we should come up with much stringent methods to clean water (with regular inspection) so it is available to all classes of people equally and we can provide quality water without any charges because when such a basic necessity of life can’t be trusted, we cannot grow as a country.

A powerful reminder on World Water Day. Diseases like Guinea worm highlight how something as basic as clean drinking water can have a major impact on health. Awareness and access to safe water truly make all the difference.

I can recollect similar disease named amoebic dysentery which is spread via drinking water contaminated with fecal matter. While purification methods for drinking water prevent these diseases but there are many areas in the globe where purified drinking water is not accessible.

Well this shows how privileged we are with science guiding us to a healthy life with a longer life- span.

Water is one of basic necessities of human being. And it should be clean and pure enough for drinking. It’s good to know that people are being aware of such things and taking necessary precautions.

Well explained

This is a good awareness post because it highlights an important public health success story.

Great post !!
Never knew this case before

Insightful post! Never heard about guinea worm disease. I get extremely paranoid when drinking water in restaurants. Though they provide bottled water, there is a nagging feeling when it comes to clean drinking water.
