Rational Use of Antibiotics in Pediatrics - A Call for Awarness

During my Pharm. D clinical rotations, I observed frequent overuse of broad-spectrum antibiotics in children. Promoting rational prescribing based on the AWaRe (Access, Watch, Reserve) classification is essential to Combat antimicrobial resistance. Pharmacists must advocate for eidence based use- especially in vulnerable pediatric populations.

Overuse of broad-spectrum antibiotics in kids is risky and can lead to resistance. Promoting the AWaRe classification helps guide safer, evidence-based choices. As pharmacy students, we should speak up and support rational prescribing. Pediatric care needs extra caution, and pharmacists play a key role in protecting future health.

Rational use of antibiotics in children is highly crucial, as children are very sensitive and vulnerable and overuse would lead to drug resistance and intolerance. Therefore, mindful and wise use of antibiotics in pediatrics should be promoted by using strategies like AWaRe classification.

Yes, the rational use of antibiotics is necessary, because early-life antibiotic exposure can gradually cause damage to the developing gut microbiome in children. Moreover, it can increase the risks towards diseased conditions like obesity, asthma etc. Awareness related to it will definitely help in selecting narrow-spectrum agents and it can also assist in the optimization of antibiotic dose and duration towards preservation of microbiome health.

I really appreciate this important reminder, In pediatrics, using antibiotics carefully not only protects little ones from side effects but also helps prevent resistant infections. Simple steps only using antibiotics when truly needed, finishing the course, and relying on doctor guidance can make a big difference in keeping kids healthy.
