“prostaglandin analogues and silent thief of sight”

Glaucoma is the major cause of irreversible blindness in the world. Reducing Intraocular pressure (IOP) is the only way for reducing progression in optic nerve damage. Antiglaucoma medications are the first step for intervention.

The first line for treatment of glaucoma is the prostaglandin analogues.
Indications for prostaglandin analogues:
Primary Open Angle glaucoma (POAG)
Primary Angle Closure glaucoma(PACG)
Normal Tension Glaucoma (NTG)

Mechanism of action:

1. Receptor activation and triggering the synthesis of tissue remodelling enzymes such as mettaloproteineases

2. Widening of the connective tissue spaces

3. Relaxation of ciliary muscle

4. Increase in trabecular and uveoscleral outflow

5. Decrease in IOP.
