This week, we explored Latanoprost, a Prostaglandin F₂α (PGF₂α) analogue and a first-line medication used in the management of Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma (POAG) and ocular hypertension.

Mechanism of Action (MOA)

• Increases uveoscleral outflow of aqueous humor

• Reduces intraocular pressure (IOP)

Clinical Uses

• Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma (POAG)

• Ocular hypertension

Administration

• Administered once daily, preferably at night

Common Adverse Effects

• Iris pigmentation (brown discoloration)

• Conjunctival hyperemia

• Periorbital skin pigmentation

• Increased eyelash growth (hypertrichosis)

Contraindications / Use with Caution

• Active uveitis

• Herpetic keratitis

• Aphakia or pseudophakia with risk of cystoid macular edema
