It is micro-chip that is implanted under the retina, in the region of the macula that has lost photoreceptors due to advanced AMD.
In a recent clinical trial, 84% of participants (who had lost central vision from advanced dry AMD) were able to read letters, numbers or words after implantation.
In advanced “dry” AMD (called geographic atrophy), the cells in the macula die, and patient lose your central vision completely.
This chip works along with special glasses and a small computer , which is worn by patient. The glasses have a tiny camera that captures image, sends it to the chip using infrared signal. These signals communicate with leftover healthy cells in patient’s eye, which then send the message to brain allowing patient to see again.
It doesn’t restore normal eyesight, but patient in early trials could see enough to read words and recognize object.
