Pregnancy and your feet: Can your shoe size change during or after pregnancy?

Pregnancy brings remarkable changes to a woman’s body, but one unexpected change that often catches many women by surprise is an increase in shoe size. If your shoes suddenly feel tight or uncomfortable during pregnancy, you’re not imagining it. Hormonal changes, weight gain, and fluid retention can all affect the size and shape of your feet.

Can pregnancy really change your shoe size?

Yes. Studies and clinical experience have shown that pregnancy can cause changes in foot length, width, and arch height. While some women notice these changes only during pregnancy, others find that their feet remain permanently larger even after giving birth.

Not every woman experiences a change in shoe size, but it is common enough that many need to buy larger or wider shoes during or after pregnancy.

Why does shoe size increase during pregnancy?

  • Pregnancy hormones loosen ligaments:One of the main reasons is the hormone relaxin, which helps loosen ligaments throughout the body in preparation for childbirth. Unfortunately, this effect isn’t limited to the pelvis.

The ligaments supporting the feet also become more flexible, allowing the arches to flatten slightly. As the arches flatten, the feet may become longer and wider, resulting in a larger shoe size.

Increased body weight:As pregnancy progresses, additional body weight places greater pressure on the feet.

This constant pressure can contribute to:

-Flattening of the foot arch

-Increased foot length

-Wider feet

-Heel discomfort

  • Fluid retention (Edema): Swollen feet are extremely common, especially during the second and third trimesters.

Extra fluid accumulation can make shoes feel tighter, although this swelling is usually temporary and improves after delivery.

  • Changes in walking pattern: As the growing baby shifts a mother’s center of gravity, walking posture changes. This altered biomechanics places different stresses on the feet and may contribute to discomfort and structural changes over time.

Pregnancy doesn’t just change your waistline—it can also change your feet. Hormonal changes, increased body weight, and fluid retention can all contribute to larger, wider feet. For some women, these changes are temporary, while for others they become permanent.

If your shoes no longer fit after pregnancy, it’s a normal experience shared by many mothers. Choosing comfortable, supportive footwear can help protect your feet during pregnancy and beyond.

A very informative post!

Many people don’t realize that pregnancy can bring long-term musculoskeletal changes beyond the more commonly discussed symptoms. It’s a great reminder that even small changes, like shoe size have a physiological basis.
