Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) exam and Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) examination are two separate postgraduate exams in the United Kingdom, each serving distinct purposes in a doctor’s professional journey.
PLAB is carried out by the General Medical Council (GMC) and is for international medical graduates (IMGs) seeking to practice medicine in the UK. It assesses whether foreign graduates possess the same knowledge and skills as a UK graduate at the Foundation Year 2 level. PLAB is not a specialist examination but tests broad clinical knowledge, problem-solving, communication, and safe patient care. It consists of two components: PLAB 1 (multiple-choice test) and PLAB 2 (an Objective Structured Clinical Examination). Passing PLAB allows IMGs to register with the GMC and work in the UK but does not grant specialist recognition.
MRCS, on the other hand, is a postgraduate award jointly awarded by the UK and Ireland’s Royal Colleges of Surgeons. It is meant for physicians who want to specialize in surgery. MRCS examination assesses applied basic sciences, surgical anatomy, physiology, pathology, clinical expertise, and surgical techniques. It consists of Part A (written papers) and Part B (OSCE). Passing MRCS is essential for entry to higher surgical training (specialty training at ST3 level) in the UK. It is specialty-specific and, unlike PLAB, is recognized as an international benchmark of surgical ability.
