Physiotherapy in India: Challenges Faced by Physiotherapists

Physiotherapy in India has grown rapidly over the past decade, becoming an essential part of rehabilitation, pain management, sports medicine, neurology, orthopedics, and post surgical recovery. Despite the increasing demand for rehabilitation services, physiotherapists in India continue to face several professional, financial, and social challenges that affect both their careers and patient care.

Low salaries, long working hours, limited recognition, and fewer opportunities in rural areas also affect the profession. Many physiotherapists experience physical and mental burnout due to heavy patient loads and demanding clinical work. In addition, the lack of proper regulation and standardized policies creates difficulties in career growth and professional identity.

Despite these challenges, the demand for physiotherapy is increasing because of rising sports injuries, lifestyle disorders, neurological conditions, and rehabilitation needs. With better awareness, stronger healthcare policies, and improved support systems, physiotherapy can play an even bigger role in India’s healthcare sector.
