Yes, @Jeevitha there is a mechanistic link. Phenytoin stimulates certain cells in the gums called fibroblasts which produce excess collagen. This leads to the thickening and overgrowth of gum tissue especially with poor oral hygiene. So, the drug and the body’s response together cause gingival hyperplasia.
