PerioChip is a small, biodegradable antimicrobial insert used as an adjunctive treatment for chronic periodontitis. It is placed directly into periodontal pockets measuring 5 mm or deeper following scaling and root planing (SRP). Each chip contains 2.5 mg of chlorhexidine gluconate, which is gradually released over 7–10 days to reduce bacterial load and improve periodontal health.
How PerioChip Works
After deep cleaning, the dental professional inserts the orange-brown gelatin chip into the infected periodontal pocket. The chip slowly dissolves, continuously releasing chlorhexidine at the treatment site. This sustained local delivery helps eliminate harmful bacteria while minimizing systemic exposure. Since the chip is biodegradable, no removal appointment is required.
Indications
PerioChip is primarily indicated for:
- Chronic periodontitis
- Persistent periodontal pockets ≥5 mm
- Localized periodontal infections as an adjunct to SRP
It may be re-administered every 3 months in sites that continue to show deep periodontal pockets.
Advantages
- Sustained local antimicrobial action
- Biodegradable and self-dissolving
- Minimal systemic side effects
- No concerns regarding antibiotic resistance
- Convenient chairside placement
Limitations
PerioChip is not a standalone cure for periodontal disease. It does not regenerate lost periodontal bone or tissues and cannot replace proper oral hygiene practices or supportive periodontal therapy.
Possible Side Effects
Some patients may experience temporary:
- Tooth or gum discomfort
- Mild gingival swelling or redness
- Sensitivity after placement
- Headache
These effects are often associated with the scaling procedure or the placement of the chip itself.
Contraindications
PerioChip should not be used in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to chlorhexidine.
