Pediatric Syrup and oral health

When child become ill ,liquid form of medication commonly used.It will help to child to recover from condition but there will be some side effects in the childs mouth.

Syrup form is preferred for child because of easy to administer , accepted, sweet in taste.

But syrup medication contain high sugar and acid content which is harmful for teeth.

As children’s teeth are more prone to dental caries. Pediatrics syrup increases

  • Susceptibility of dental caries
  • Plaque accumulation
  • Enamel erosion

How to prevent effect of syrup on oral health -

  • Give enough water intake to child to remove residual syrup
  • Avoid overuse of syrup, give only when indicated and prescribe by doctor
  • Maintenance of good oral hygiene
  • Sugar free alternatives syrup option.
  • Regular visit to Pediatric dentist

Medicine is necessary for good health - but using with awareness and careful prevention is required.
