In India we mainly focus on prescription than on patient counselling .
Many patients leave the pharmacy without knowing :
- How to take their medicine properly
- Possible side effects
- Drug food interaction
- Why adherence matters .

That’s so true. In India, most people just take the medicine without knowing how or why. Proper counselling can really help patients take medicines safely and get better results.
Yes , you are right most of the Patient just take the medicine without knowing how to take medicine or why the medicine is given to them
True. This is very crucial and appropriate steps should be taken to handle this, so that people get awareness regarding the medications they are taking. This counseling is very important and it can vary considering the age and gender of the person and also any co-morbid conditions if they are suffering from. The patients should be told how to take the medicine like there are some medications that need to be taken before/after food or some medications need to be taken with much amount of water for the reduction of the side-effects, which food/drink not to be taken much while being on that medication and what precautions to take while being on that so that its effectiveness does not get compromised and for how long to take and when to consult the doctor again etc. There are certain medications, during which one cannot do intermittent fasting/regular fasting, so this information can be conveyed as well. So people with the right knowledge of patient counseling are very much required in today’s time at drug stores.
This is indeed a sad reality that most patient leaves the pharmacy without being totally aware of the drug they are going to intake. The most the people would know is the method and the time of administration of drugs from the pharmacists. They would be completely unaware of the possible side effects, drug-drug interaction, drug-food interaction. This is why patient counselling matters, people should know exactly what, why, when and how they should take a medication. They should be provided with information and guidance on the drugs to ensure safe and effective use.
A prescription is just the start. True healing begins when patients are educated, empowered, and heard.
Exactly! In India, we often forget that medicine is not just about the prescription—it’s also about understanding it.Patients walk away confused, unaware of when or how to take their meds, what food to avoid, or why skipping doses can be harmful.Proper counselling can actually prevent side effects and improve treatment outcomes. It’s time we make patient education a bigger priority.
Yes it’s lagging beyond than we can imagine i wish we could reverse it
Every hospital, pharmacies should start patuent counselling in India
Patient counselling really is that crucial ingredient we’re missing. A lot of times medication doesn’t work as well because patients don’t understand how or why to take it. I have seen the difference a simple, clear explanation makes suddenly patients feel empowered and outcomes improve. We need to make this a core part of healthcare, not an afterthought.
