Out In or Opt Out : which fits the future healthcare of India ?

India currently follows Opt in system where people have to opt in which people have to actively make the decision to give consent for organ donation and end of life situations. Most people in India don’t opt in due to various reasons like stigma related to death or lack of awareness.

In other countries like Spain they use an Opt out system , where the people are assumed as donors unless they say actively say no. These countries show higher organ donation rates in a year and more smooth processing of end of life care planning.

There is also an option in between - Soft opt out where the patient is assumed as a donor but the family is asked before making the final decision. Countries such as UK have this system.

According to you , should India follow opt in , opt out or soft opt out system ?
Would you choose to donate your organs ? Whats your take on it ?

This is such an important conversation, Prisha. Personally, I believe India should move towards a soft opt-out system—it respects individual autonomy while also addressing the urgent need for more organ donations. With proper awareness, counseling, and safeguards, this middle path can improve donation rates without disregarding family values or consent.
