Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition characterized by excessive fat accumulation in the liver. It is further classified into NASH (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis) and NAFL (non-alcoholic fatty liver). Due to its asymptomatic nature, NAFLD is often difficult to diagnose. In India, approximately 35% of the population is affected by fatty liver issues, with most cases being detected incidentally through routine blood tests or examinations for other health problems.

The major causes of NAFLD include:

Obesity

Insulin resistance

Metabolic defects

Fibrosis

Treatment options focus on lifestyle modifications, such as

Weight loss: 5-10% of total body fat loss

Nutritional diet: Low sugar consumption

Physical exercise: A 30-minute walk is sufficient

While there is no specific medical treatment for NAFLD, research suggests that semaglutide may have potential therapeutic effects.

As a healthcare provider, what are your suggestions?

As a healthcare provider, I’d suggest a multidisciplinary approach for NAFLD, starting with early screening in high-risk groups like diabetics and obese individuals.
Sustainable lifestyle changes (weight loss, balanced diet, regular exercise) remain the cornerstone of management.
Exploring emerging treatments like semaglutide under clinical guidance is promising, but preventive awareness and patient education are still our strongest tools.
