NG101:A New Hope for Acute Spinal Cord Injury Recovery

Researchers at the University of Zurich are exploring a groundbreaking approach for acute spinal cord injury using antibodies against Nogo-A — a naturally occurring protein that prevents damaged nerve fibers from regenerating.

The novel antibody NG101 has shown promising results by helping preserve existing nerve tissue and accelerating the reduction of spinal cord lesions after acute injury.

How does it work?

After a spinal cord injury, a protein called Nogo-A, found in the myelin sheath surrounding nerve fibers, acts like a biological “brake” that blocks nerve regeneration.

NG101 works as a targeted antibody that neutralizes Nogo-A, helping remove this barrier and allowing damaged nerve pathways to reconnect and recover more effectively.

Early findings suggest important benefits in patients with motor-incomplete spinal cord injuries, including:

• Faster lesion shrinkage

• Reduced nerve tissue degeneration

• Improved voluntary movement in the arms and hands
