A recent study among 246 school students from grades 7–12 across five schools in Kashmir found that about 45% reported poor or moderate mental wellbeing. The research explored how different forms of digital activity relate to students’ psychological health.
The findings showed that 9.3% of students had poor wellbeing and 35% had moderate wellbeing, indicating that a significant proportion of adolescents may be experiencing mental health challenges.
Researchers also found weak but significant negative associations between wellbeing and activities such as smartphone use, messaging, internet searching, and video gaming, with gaming showing the strongest link to lower wellbeing scores.
Another interesting observation was technology-related anxiety. More than 14% of students reported distress when unable to send text messages, and over 17% felt anxious when they could not make phone calls, suggesting dependence on digital communication.
Experts say the findings highlight the need for digital literacy programs, balanced screen use, and stronger school-based mental health support for adolescents.
