Effects of Cannabis (Ganja) Use on Students

Cannabis use among students has become an increasingly serious concern due to its widespread prevalence and documented negative impacts on academic achievement, cognitive development, mental health, and physical wellbeing. Research consistently demonstrates that regular cannabis use during adolescence and young adulthood significantly impairs learning, memory, and concentration while increasing the risk of psychological disorders and respiratory complications. In India, approximately 6.3% of college students and 2.0% of school students report using cannabis (ganja/charas) in the past 12 months, with Chhattisgarh being among the states with the highest prevalence.

Effects on Academic Performance

Point Average and Graduation one of the most extensively documented impacts of cannabis use is its negative effect on academic performance. Research from longitudinal studies of college students demonstrates that students who use marijuana more frequently during their first year of college skip significantly more classes, which subsequently leads to lower grades. The data shows a clear pathway: frequent marijuana use → increased class skipping → lower GPA → delayed graduation.

The addiction of any type of drugs is dangerous.

It is a major concern. We can acknowledge only the symptoms whereas the main root cause is not addressed. Strict and immediate punishable laws are needed.

This is very deeply concerning, as cannabis remains illegal in India despite regulatory measures, yet underground supply network continues to operate.

Use of cannabis is highly prevalent among medical students due to high academic stress. Government intervention cannot fully stop this issue. The negative impact of its use must be made aware among the students at an earlier age.
