Traditionally used to treat allergic rhinitis, azelastine has also shown antiviral activity against respiratory viruses, including several SARS-CoV-2 variants. To test its efficacy in preventing infection, researchers at a hospital in Germany randomly assigned 450 participants to receive either azelastine spray or a placebo 3 times per day for about 2 months. The findings revealed that participants who used azelastine were significantly less likely to test positive for COVID-19: 2% had confirmed illness vs 7% in the placebo group.

This is really promising. It’s fascinating to see a common allergy medication showing potential antiviral effects, especially against COVID-19. If further studies confirm this, azelastine could become an easy and accessible tool alongside vaccines and masks.

It’s amazing to see a regularly used antihistamine, such as azelastine, exhibit possible antiviral properties. This study demonstrates the potential of repurposing current drugs to help prevent infections, particularly during pandemics.
